Details of Pierre-Paul's Surgery Emerge

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported Dr. Robert Hotchkiss, who is the Giants' hand specialist, performed the procedure, which was done to help Pierre-Paul's grip:
The surgery, Pierre-Paul explained in late December, would concentrate on his right middle finger, which was turned into a bloated, oversized and largely unusable digit as a result of the July 4 fireworks accident that did permanent damage to his right hand. Pierre-Paul in the summer had to have his right index finger amputated — including the knuckle — and all that remained of his right thumb was a short stump. He missed the first eight games and wore a bulky, oven mitt-type club wrap on his right hand the final eight games of the season.

Pierre-Paul's Giants Future Uncertain After Injury
Pierre-Paul, 27, accumulated 26 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a sack in eight games this past season. It was a down year for Pierre-Paul, who posted 12.5 sacks in 2014, though his abbreviated season and hand injury certainly played a major role in his lower production.
JPP missed half of the season after a contract dispute with the Giants. The team used the franchise tag on the defensive end, but he never signed his tender, and the parties eventually agreed to a one-year deal in October.
The Giants finished 30th in the NFL with just 23 sacks this season, so bringing back a top pass-rusher like Pierre-Paul would be a logical move. With more time to recover from his hand injury and a full preseason to prepare, he would be expected to bounce back and be far more productive in 2016.
